I just had to remove an #include patch, so it was just easier to pull it from the patch and then re-tar it up... It's now linux-2.2.17-ow1-w4l.tar.bz2 instead of linux-2.2.17-ow1.tar.bz2. Other than that it should be pretty much following along with your notes. I've booted the 2.2.17-w4l one just fine on my box, alsa works, as well as reiserfs, just fine.
