I am writing to report my success at getting win4lin version 1 update 4 to
work on redhat 7. This has been a difficult journey from redhat 6.2 and I
hope recording it may reduce the effort for someone else.
As far as I can tell the redhat2.2.16patch does not work properly when
applied to the kernel that comes with redhat 7. Writing to trelos support I
was advised to compile the standard kernel 2.2.16 or 2.2.17 and apply the
appropriate patch. I tried to apply the patch and compile the kernel
together with the usb backport patch(from linux-usb.org) and it would not
compile. I presumed this was a problem with the patches.

I have since read at the redhat linux faq page that the glibc version
shipped with redhat 7 will not compile a standard kernel from non redhat
source. I find it ironical that a linux distribution ships without the inate
ability to compile a linux kernel from the usual source files. You can of
course compile from the redhat source files but then the patch doesn't work
and netraverse has not yet supplied a patch for 2.2.16-22.
Using the workaround from redhat (available on their website:
ie. editing the Makefile for the source files and substituting kgcc for gcc
in the line
CC    =$(CROSS_COMPILE)gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I$(HPATH)

and then compiling as usual I was able to get a working kernel 2.2.16 with
win4lin and USB support. THe kgcc uses an older glibc version that will
compile the kernel.
Prior to installing the system I had updated my system to the updated glibc
version for redhat 7. I am not sure if this is essential to get win4lin
working. After installing the kernel, the win4lin program and update4,
windows installs and appears to work without problem. I am using the
backingstore option in Xserver version 4.01.
I hope this helps others install the program and it would have been useful
if trelos support had given me this information on the numerous occasions
that I contacted them.
