There are two choice when you load the CD:

install from the CD, and from a directory.

Did you try the latter? When you say "pointing to /mnt/cdrom" did you use the
from directory option? You have to use that, browse to /mnt/cdrom or wherever 
you mounted your CD, and install should start...

I had a similar problem, because of the supermount I have for removable
media...This way I could fix it.
