As I understand it, most winmodems use VxDs which (like linux kernel
modules) require access in 'ring 0' to control registers and other
privileged instructions. The win4lin virtual-machine is not complete
enough to handle/virtualise these (VmWare & plex86 are more likely to
handle these, but may run too slowly)
