Anxious to try out Win4Lin 3.0 while I wait for the 2.0->3.0 upgrade
infrastructure to be rolled out, I downloaded the Win4lin 3 installer and
got a trial key.

The installer hangs early in the process, when it tries to download
"update information from server".

System:
  Celeron/300
  64 MB RAM
  Debian 2.2 upgraded to Progeny Debian 1
  Behind an IP Masqueraded connection
    (WWW access works fine behind firewall with or without using a proxy)
  Kernel 2.4.5 patched for Win4lin

Here's what I do:

$ xhost +
$ su
# cd /tmp
# tar xzf ...../netraverse_installer.tgz
# cd netraverse_installer
# ./win4lin-install

The Win4Lin installer comes up, says "No Win4Lin installation
present. Preparing to install Win4lin"

I click "Skip check, proceed with installation." so it will not check for
a new installer (I just downloaded it last night)

I click "Next" and the installer switches to the "Linux System
Analysis" stage, with blank "Distribution", "Version", and "Linux Kernel
Revision" fields on the right side.

Another window appears, saying "Downloading update information from the
server."

At this point it does absolutely nothing. It is certainly not downloading
any update information -- when I look at my hub not a single light
blinks... not even periodically to indicate the installer perhaps
retrying the connection.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, and is there a suggested
solution?

<my-two-cents>
Graphical installers are great when they work OK, give you the option of a
detailed log of what it's doing, and give you an option to cancel if it's
hung up and unable to connect to a server.

However in this case, I long for the win4lin 2.0 style install. For the
type of user I am, it was MUCH simpler to download and install a RPM file.
