The point raised about the 2.4.x kernel using swap more aggressively may be
on the right track. I'm running 2.4.5, and right now top is showing me this:
Mem: 384760K av, 269980K used, 114780K free, 0K shrd, 76164K buff
Swap: 128484K av, 29996K used, 98488K free 117436K cached
I have over 1000MB free, but there is 30MB is swap. Want to bet that some of
that is Win4Lin, or other programs that are sleeping. I took the above
"snapshot" shortly after switching from Win4Lin, but I would still give
credence to the theory.
