Speaking of that, am I doing something wrong, so that I can't get Windows to
run at 1400x1050?  It seems to be either not supported by Windows itself, or
by the Merge adapter.

This time this is the case.  Refer to the Release Note
on this new feature.

The new default is to automatically size the Window.
So, if you use fwin it automatically fills the entire screen,
and when you run it in a Windows on your Linux desktop it
makes it smaller than the screen dimentions.

The winsetup utility is used to change this option.
You can either turn of off completely or use it to fix the
size to whatever you want.
