Normally, RH installs a pre-compiled kernel image.

If I am not mistaken, the public W4L kernel patches are designed to
be applied to original Linux kernel source code
If that is the case, then you can't assume that the distro patches
will work after the W4L patch has been applied to the original Linux
source code, and you can't assume that the W4L patch will work after the
distro patches have been applied.
By the rule that says the way that eliminates the greatest number
of unknowns is the best way to go, I decided that official Linux + W4L
patch makes the most sense to me -- and if the distro doesn't like that,
to dump the distro.
This forced me to brush up on my kernel-building technique, but
that was a good thing because I now have a simpler and cleaner (2.4.5)
kernel that I trust much more than the (2.4.2) blunderbuss that came
with the distro I happen to be using.
