Hi, I've been working with Netraverse support on the following problem for awhile now and they seem to be running out of ideas (as am I) so I thought I would see if anyone else is having a similar problem or has any ideas for solution. The short summary is that I have been unable to compile a patched generic kernel which works with Win4Lin3.0. I've patched and compiled (and used Win4Lin3.0 on) the following successfully: RH 2.2.17-14 RH 2.4.2-2 with the appropriate Netraverse patches. I tried to patch and compile the following: generic 2.2.18 (and the pre-patched generic 2.2.18 from Netraverse) generic 2.2.19 generic 2.4.5 In each of the latter cases, the patch and compile process goes fine and I get a working kernel. However, when I start up Win4Lin3.0 I get a dialog box with the following error message: VMSVR_FAIL: dos: VM server initialize failed. error 515. In all cases, I'm using similar .config files and the same process for compiling. I've tried make mrproper (doesn't help) and also tried a pretty generic .config. In general, the .config I'm using is a standard RedHat (either from 2.2.17-14 or 2.4.2-2) one with a couple of changes in APM settings. I'm running all these kernels on an up to date RedHat 6.2 system. I'm reluctant to upgrade to RH7.1 since I need to support software on RH6.2. However, I do need to get a kernel newer than 2.2.17 since I need the improved USB support that is available on the newer (either 2.2.18 or beyond or 2.4.x) kernels. At the moment, I'm sticking with the RedHat 2.4.2-2 which does run Win4Lin3.0 for me. I have noted, as have others on this list, that Win4Lin runs noticeably slower on 2.4.2 than on 2.2.x. In my case, it seems to be related to considerable disk I/O which occurs during the sluggish moments. I think I remember seeing on this list that later 2.4.x kernels seemed better for some people. I can try to go to RH 2.4.3 if that is likely to be any faster. Also, I'm sure I've seen people successfully using generic 2.4.5 so I'd like to know what they are doing differently than me. System details: Dell Inspiron 4000, 800mHz PIII, 192MB, RedHat 6.2 with all current updates. Current version of Win4Lin3.0, Windows 95 OSR2. Any ideas would be welcome.
