I had similar problem recently, although I didn't get any error
messages when I tried to start win4lin, just frozen on startup.
I solved the problem by removing my ~/win directory and replacing
it with a backup copy from the previous day. You do have backups?
If not, you might just try mv'ing ~/win to ~/win.old, and
restarting win. You will have to reinstall the user but at least
the system settings might be saved.
BTW, it is very easy to do a quick and dirty backup each day.
The following command generates the cp -au command to backup your
entire system.
dir -1 / | sed 's/^.*$/cp -au \/& \/backup_place\//g'
Just save it to a file and edit it manually to customize it
(don't backup up /proc, for example, and realize this doesn't
follow symbolic links, just preserves them. Run it once per day
from your root crontab file. The only drawback to this approach
is that the old file is erased by the new file. Therefore, you
may overwrite a file you wanted to save, but, this is quick and
dirty.
I have a huge data drive to store my mp3's (80 gigs) and so my
system easily fits onto it. This way, if my system drive goes
down, I will be able to recover rather easily. (Pride goeth, etc.
but this is why I left windows.)
