For example, I am running RH7.1 on a Sony VAIO PCG-490K and I use a 3Com 3c589 PCMCIA card for my network support. The reason that is important is that error message appears on my laptop when the PCMCIA card is not installed. Its a home built system with a Netgear FA310 network card. Linux can see the network fine and Win4Lin has always been ok - there have been no system changes over night and the error appeared out of the blue with no other problems on the system.
