My mail is not getting through it seems, but, it will likely
sometime.
If you haven't got wordperfect8 or abiword, and don't want to
fire up staroffice, the easiest command to read word97 documents
seems to be strings.
strings word97.doc puts out a surprisingly good looking text
file, I have just noticed.
In my mailcap file, I used:
application/octet-stream;strings %s | less
and it did just fine in mutt.
It didn't seem to work in netscape, but I suspect some fooling
around with it might make it work there, too.
