I use linux and mutt for mail. You can configure netscape 6.0 and
mutt to read word97 files using helper applications (abiword or
wordperfect 8).

For mutt, I placed this entry into ~/.mailcap
application/octet-stream;/opt/wp8/wpbin/xwp %s

And, then, mutt will display it for me.

You could use abiword the same way, I believe, but abiword is not
working right on this particular linux box.

Netscape 6.0 allows you to easily add helper applications to read
various file formats, which I just did with abiword, and it now
displays word97 documents, although I haven't tried this with
mail.

So, what you want to do may be fairly simple.
