With JAWS, you could try pressing alt+ down arrow to open the combo
box, and then use your up and down arrow keys to read through the list
of choices.
Quoting David Griffith <[email protected]>:
This is very annoying.
I have tried the following techniques with combo boxes that do not read.
1. After opening the drop down list just type the required item name. In
this case it will be the scanner model I guess - then tab away. Shift
Tabbing back onto the combo box will sometimes enable you to hear the item
selected and you can check if you have the right one.
2. Technique 2- open the drop box press down cursor and then tab away and
shift tab. You can then often check what you have selected. Time consuming
and tedious but you could eventually get down to the driver you want.
3. Have you tried reading the combo box with NVDA rather than Windows Eyes?
I do not use Windows Eyes but NVDA does sometimes work with combo boxes that
Jaws cannot read.
4. I have also found oddly that older versions of Jaws such as version 11
will read combo boxes that 13 will struggle with.
Have you got an older version of window Eyes that you could try with?
Best of luck.

Subject: Windows: The Old Old Problems!
Hi all
OK, I've just had a very ugly reminder of the reasons why I migrated away
from Windows in 2009. Now that I have reasons to use Windows again with my
pending employment prospects, I have been fortunate enough to have a license
for Abbyy FineReader Corporate Edition be bought for me by Lynne. But,
although my HP Scanjet PhotoSmart 2700 PFC is being seen as a printer, I
cannot get it to be seen as a scanner by FineReader. I've tried everything
I can think of, but the programme is just showing me, or rather, Window-Eyes
is presenting me with blank combo boxes from which I'm am supposed to select
a driver. I have absolutely no idea how many drivers are actually being
listed there, so I just had to keep trying. But after about a dozen failed
attempts, I kind of gave up on it.
So, I wonder if anybody has any suggestions as to how I can determine the
correct scanner and set it as the default? This machine is really nice, but
I do wish companies like Samsung would stop trying to take over the world,
and write so-called universal scanner drivers that don't work most of the
time.
Anyway, suggestions welcome.
Gordon
