Hi all

I guess this will mostly interest those intending to upgrade to Windows 8,
(like us). It's expected that, in the first week of January 2013, Horizon Data
Systems will be releasing their long-awaited and, so they say, eagerly
anticipated RollBack v10.0.0 which will incorporate new features, plus Windows
8 compatibility.

Windows 8 is, as I understand it, the first version in which Microsoft has
finally started to remove some of the old 8 and 16-bit dynamic link libraries,
(.DLL) which were introduced when they released Windows 3.1, 95, 98 and XP.
Driven by, I suspect, the need to maintain their position in the race against
their competitors, Microsoft is now moving towards native 64-bit and, I would
expect, 128-bit operating system environment. When Intel releases its first
128-bit CPYU and chipset for home and mobile computers, I would expect a
frantic race to ensue between Apple and Microsoft as to which company will be
the first to support the new environment fully.

In respect of the current systems which, as we all know, are 64-bit, Apple most
definitely won the race when they released Mac OS X 10.7 and, more recently,
the renamed OS X 10.8, (Mountain Lion). Apple has now dropped the word "Mac"
from the name of its operating system. Anyway, as I was saying. I am curious
as to which of the big two will win the next round of the battle when Intel
makes its move which is widely expected to happen at some point in 2013.

But back to the original point. Horizon Data Systems is set to announce their
new RollBack in the first week of January. There's probably going to be quite
a few software title updates around that time. I'm not quite sure when, but
I'm given to understand that Microsoft Office 2013 will also be released early
in the new year.

I suppose we'll all have to start checking to see which of our Windows
applications are compatible with Windows 8. If Microsoft has indeed removed
support for the old libraries, many developers have some work to do and, no
doubt, their customers will have to pay the price. I understand why that is,
developers have to eat as well! But their are some developers who will see
this as yet another opportunity to rip of their customers and make a tidy
profit. Anyway, we have an interesting few months ahead of us I would think.
