I've not had any need to use Windows 8 yet but would like to make the following observations based upon others I know well who use the system, those I can count on my fingers and they all say one thing, - for the time being - don't use windows 8 if you can avoid doing so.
if you must use Windows 8 then it is suggested that you use the NVDA Screen Reader with it as it would appear to be the best accessible solution for windows 8 around at this time. Now bare in mind that what you see in Windows 8 now may not be what you see in Windows 8 come 3 months time. If you've had a quick look at the system then you'll no doubt be aware that the "Stat Menue" we're all familiar with has disappeared. The removal of the "Start Menu" hasn't gone down too well with the public so Microsoft will be reintroducing it again in a major update for Windows 8 to be released sometime in July. That will mean some adjustments on behalf of all Screen Reader developers. Again, what I've written - apart from the update stuff which I read in an article - is from other users of the Windows 8 system, I'll most likely go down that road at some stage myself but at the moment I have only 1 computer here which would really support Windows 8 well enough for me to get the real use out of the interface so I'm not in any hurry and its interesting enough to just watch and hear what's happening. A comment from GW Micro is that with the introduction of Windows 8 as it is Microsoft have taken a step backwards when it comes to accessibility, apparently all the people at Microsoft who knew what they were doing - thanks to the excellent work that Gw Micro did with Microsoft some time back - have nearly all gone so its "retraining" time again for want of a better description. So the advice for what its worth in summary, - where you can - downgrade your Notebook or whatever to Windows 7 and if you must use Windows 8 then use NVDA, I've no knowledge of how accessible or otherwise System Access is with Windows 8 but - going on the reputation of System Access - I'd think it be quite reasonable at the very least.
