Hi David
Jaws is giving me a number of issues at the moment. Prime of which is repeatedly requesting activation, despite my having successfully completed a monual activation yesterday. The Internet-based activation wouldn't connect to their server, desvite us having a clear DMZ network connection, which means in essence that ny ports are being blocked.

When you refer to active cursor I guess you mean the Jaws cursor. You can toggle the settings for this with Jaws key plus R. There are a whole number of options including window restriction, focus window restriction, frame
restriction and so on. I suspect the setting you want however is
unrestricted. I personally use this a lot. With unrestricted set, your
cursor can go anywhere on the screen you want.

Subject: Jaws 15, initial Impressions

 Hello everybody
I have just completed the process of installing, aceativating
and configuring Jaws 15 on my primary computer. My initial
impressions are somewhat mixed. I guess I'm just used to the way
that orther screen-readers on onether platforms behave. But it
seems to me that Jaws still doesn't allow the kind of dynamic
object interaction available in applications such not NVDA and
Window-Eyes. I am deliberately avoiding making comparisons
between Windows-based access solutions such as Jaths and Apple's
VoiceOver. Since the two operating systems are so very
different, it would be grossly unfair to compare them either at
the access level or the basic operating system level.
So, back to Jaws. I note that Freedom still doesn't seem to
allow the active cursor to wander outside of the active
application, treating the application window as a kind of sheet
of paper whose boundrieeas you cannot cross.
Again, these are only initial impressions and I have no doubt
that I still have lots to learn.
I know, I always said that I wouldn't ever deal with Freedom
again following their disgusting treatment of me from several
years back. But need's must, and in any event grudges get one
nowhere. So last week we bit the proverbial bullet and bought a
license for a single-user client of Jaws Professional 15.
Interestingly enough, although I do have an active Internet
connection, Freedom's automatic activation application refused to
allow me to connect to their servers. I was, however, able to
connect to the fsactivate.com system and obtain a license code
from there without any trouble. So I just used the manual
activation method and that worked great.
I'm also pleased to say that I've been able to configure Jaws
to use my prefurred software speech synthesiser. That was quite
a welcome bonus because I really do not like that awful Eloquance
system. I will be most interested to go through some of the
training material to find out what's changed since I last played
with Jaws when version 11 was current. I'm particularly looking
forward to playing with the Microsoft Ofice applications to see
how well those work. On this machine, I also have licensed
versions of Window-eyes, Access To Go, Dolphin Supernova and, of
course,
NVDA. I'm looking forward to seeing how well each system
performs within the environments I need to work in. Mary may be
able to advise me regarding Duxbury Braille Translator 11.1
SRBLED. I'm toying with the idea of attempting to remove
Microsoft Office Professional 2010, in favour of version 2013,
for which we also have a license. Hopefully the Office
experience under Jaws will be a good one.
I welcome very much any comment others may have regarding how
Jaws works. Especially if such comment helps me to get the best
out of it.
And finally, I apologise for any errors in this message. It was
written using my BrailleNote Apex and I still seem to get stray
ghost dots now and then. I'm going to be talking in some detail
about that in a post to our sister group "Techno-Chat" in the not
too distant future.
  Kind regards
