Perhaps it's time to talk to the FHS guys about a possible inclusion
of Wine windows/pseudo-windows directories in the Filesystem Hierarchy
Standard. Probably in two versions: with native Windows on disk, and
without.
Goals:
Define guidelines
- which drive letters should hold globally installed applications
if possible
- which drive letters should be for the users' stuff (home dir),
which tmp directories are used
- how packages for installation under Wine should be prepared
(if possible)
Obviously we have no control over Windows packages. But perhaps
in the long term distributions like Debian, RedHat would provide
installer guidelines on how to put Windows packages in so that
they fit totally smoothly with the rest of the machine.
Also, it would greatly simplify the task for companies that want
to bring out packages for Windows and Wine.
The Wine developers have a lot of experience in handling Windows
installations, but I for instance don't; I've spent all my life
on Unix and I just use Wine for some programs.
Users can always do local modifications via ~/.winerc.
