Well, the situation was by far not trivial. Basically, there was no way
for Red Hat to meet all desiderata, so a compromise had to be made.
Shipping a stabilized snapshot of GCC does make sense in some cases.
However, Red Hat definitely should not have called that version "GCC 2.96"
(on the web page etc.) and it should have made much clearer that this was
an unofficial snapshot of GCC.

GCC recently has received a complete overhaul of its preprocessor, and my
guess is that the new version is correct. However, if you believe this to
be a bug -- or you just are not sure -- please ask [EMAIL PROTECTED], with
a Cc: to Neil Booth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, about this change.
Neil is usually very responsive; you can mention that I suggested you to
ask. ;-)

Definitely! :-)

Jakub is maintaining a modified version of some snapshot of GCC 2.96
(which -- until two months ago -- denoted the development branch of GCC)
for Red Hat which uses it for Red Hat Linux 7.
He also contributes a lot of quality assurance and bug fixing to the GCC
project in general, but he is not the official maintainer of GCC 2.96 (as
there isn't such a version at all, nor will there ever be).
The latest official version of GCC is 2.95.2 which will receive a
maintainance update, 2.95.3, soon. The next official version of GCC
will be 3.0, due this spring.
