I realize wineinstall will do the work for you, but aren't people just used to ./configure - make - make install? I think they do that, then they're stuck. configure always tells you to do a 'make depend && make', why not throw in a little blrub "Hey, if you're running this for the first time, run wineinstall instead." ? Or is wineinstall not doing what I think it is (setting up initial environment)?
