[Winona Online Democracy]

Hello Steve and Winona Online Democracy,

This will be an interesting week in the Winona area. We will have two
of the state's top political leaders visiting our community. Not only will
Governor Pawlenty be in town tomorrow (Tuesday), but House Speaker Steve
Sviggum will be in Goodview on Friday.

---

Governor Pawlenty: Tomorrow, Tuesday

Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 1st (no fooling), Governor Pawlenty will be
visiting Winona. He will speak in the Council Chambers of City Hall
from noon to 1:00 p.m.. The public is welcome.

---

Speaker of the House Steve Sviggum: Friday

This Friday, April 5th, Speaker Sviggum will have a listening session at
5:00 p.m. at the Goodview City Hall.

---

My main concern is that these high level visits are usually carefully
orchestrated media events with pre-packaged messages (from all political
parties). Rarely do real people get to ask real questions.

Polls show that most Minnesotans still don't understand the consequences
of the Governor's proposed budget. I think we need to help the media
and the public better understand the consequences by putting a human
face on these proposed cuts.

On another note, at the bottom off this message I will include some
interesting facts that I believe support the idea that government
programs help make Minnesota a great place to live.

"Bragging Rights"

1. Even though Minnesota has been considered a high tax state for many
years, it has had the fastest growing population of any state in the
Upper Midwest because of its robust economy and high quality of life.

2. Following a fifty-state Governing Magazine survey, Minnesota
received two stars (out of a possible four) for adequacy of revenues,
and was noted for its good management of the state revenue system.

3. State budget forecast documents show that more than 75% of the
budget's deterioration in the last 12 months reflects a collapse in
state tax collections, not an increase in state spending.

4. According to the Minnesota legislative auditor's office, upper level
managers and professional positions pay more in the private sector than
in the public sector.

5. In the last decade Minnesota has outperformed every Midwestern
state-and most states in the union-on almost every economic indicator.
Minnesota is the
Midwest leader in job creation, economic growth, earnings and earnings
growth.

6. Minnesota earns straight A's from the Corporation for Enterprise
Development, a national think tank that studies state business climates.
