In the discussion of the overpass project I want to put out the idea that
you don't have to settle for a standard, bland design for the bridge. There
are many examples from around the State and the U.S. (and the world) of very
creative bridge projects that become beloved community features rather than
simply utilitarian engineering projects.

Having worked on some of these projects here in the Cities I can speak from
experience that all a community has to do is ask for some creative input and
insist on something beyond the ordinary and often they can get it. There
may be additional costs, but often there are things that engineers can do to
enhance a project and reflect a community's wishes that don't add cost.
Sometimes local artists can be brought in to add features that are
incorporated into the designs (rather than just tacked on at the end).

I have worked with the engineers at SEH on many projects and know that they
have the skills and resources to do something unique - if you ask (insist).
Engineers need to address the basics - like making sure it stands up and is
easy to build and maintain - but you can have it all: something structurally
sound and beautiful, if you set this as a priority.

I have attached a link to one project my firm designed in Burnsville on
I-35W. There are many examples I would love to share - I wanted to attached
jpeg images, but they can't come through the WOD server. I will look up
other links and send them along if others are interested in other examples
