Paul,

Your point about naming the ten largest retailers that are locally owned is
valid to a certain degree; Shopko, Target, K-Mart and the like are not
exactly Mom and Pop shops.

But would you agree that Wal Mart represents a whole other kind of business?

Their goal is to wipe out competition, not to encourage it. Aren't we
talking about a monopoly or trust that dwarfs the robber barons of the late
1800's and early 1900's?

GS Comments: I don't know what Wal-Mart's goals are. I suspect Dwayne
doesn't really either. He is probably attributing a goal to them based on
his perceptions. I doubt that those perceptions are bias free.

Wal-Mart is not a monopoly. Not by any stretch of the imagination. First
Dwayne lists three of their largest national competitors and then he calls
them a monopoly. Huh? The most obvious difference between Wal-Mart and
Shopko, Target, K-Mart is scale. Wal-Mart is larger because it has been more
successful. Some of their operating and merchandising principles vary, but
they are essentially the same kind of retail business until you start to
look at Sam's Club.
