[Winona Online Democracy] Many thanks to Phil and Chuck for their views regarding city planning. We discussed the idea of city standards and values at the Historical Society on Wednesday. One of the participants described a community in which even the BP gas station and Target had to conform to the architectural standards required by that city. That is certainly something that our community should be discussing as well. When you consider that we still have the fabulous Prairie School architecture in our downtown as well as the other historic structures (Choate, etc.) and the Victorian neighborhood surrounding Windom Park, we should be able to create and control guidelines for new construction that compliment these styles.
However, a historic facade on a Walmart would not lure me to shop there even though the aesthetics would be improved. It would still be a wolf lurking in sheep's clothing, so I will continue to buy my socks elsewhere!
