For those of us of a younger generation, it has always been the responsibility of a full time employer to provide health insurance. I grew up with both my parents working full time and getting our health insurance from my Father's employer- he still does. I don't know why you think an individual can get more bang for their buck for health insurance. That certainly has not been our case going from being employed by a large entity, to now self insuring! Although self-insuring is cheaper than what we could get when we were part of a small business... Think of the group rate a huge conglomerate like Wal Mart could get on their insurance!
Personally I feel that companies have a moral obligation to do the very best that they can for their employees, and employees have the obligation of doing their best work for their company. I don't see Wal Mart doing that.

Terri,
Since when did it become the responsibility of employers to provide affordable "insurance" and what knowledgeable information can you provide that would indicate that Wal-Mart would offer jobs for less money than the other retail stores in Winona and be able to hire people. I have found that most people, given the choice, would rather have the money we would pay out for insurance in their paycheck as they know they can get more bang for their buck. They know insurance companies are not in business to pay out more in claims than they receive in premiums.
It seems to me you are wanting them do just the opposite, raise wages, thus driving up the labor cost for existing local retail businesses as Wal-Mart sets the example. With Wal-Mart setting hirer wages it would force the smaller retail businesses out of business because they can not afford to retain employees, meet a higher payroll cost and provide "affordable insurance", whatever that means.
