Title: notes 8/25 Steering Committee

attending: PAUL DOUBLE, KAREN FAWCETT, CRAIG BROOKS, KATHY SEIFERT, ROY NAASTROM, AND RANDY SCHENKAT

Survey data results is in limbo as it is being explored if it can be posted at web site.  The Bianchi  information will be taken down.   Kathy suggested  because the past survey results indicated that many individuals liked giving anonymous input , we will try to continue doing short survey more often as a way of maintaining feedback on the operation of WOD and meeting subscribers' needs. We are exploring if our survey tool- from  createsurvey.com allows a poster's re-entry to see results a some time after initial posting.

There was a concern mentioned regarding old WSU vax2 addresses on list.  Craig will do some individual mailings to validate if some subscriber addresses are still working.

Many ideas came forward in having broader community discussion of ideas.
It was suggested that if individuals could see that it was easy to subscribe and unsubscribe that people might sign up for one thread of a discussion.  It was also suggested that more description of what is occurring in WoD with actual quotes might be something that the local papers would be willing to carry.  Randy will explore this.

Paul shared a vision for some local talk l radio that could interface with WOD.  He will follow up with Bob Sebo in exploring ideas further

There was a general discussion regarding governance and decisions for lending the  WoD name for sponsorship of Live Events that involve citizens learning about and discussing civic issues.  It was agreed that our informal structure of generally bimonthly meetings with all of the subscribers invited was sufficient and there seems to be no interest in a formal board structure.

Regarding live events( discussions, debates, forums, etc.),  WOD is  a champion of civic discussion on local issues and has been involved in its inception in live events. The resource limits and ad hoc nature of WOD must be realized. WOD would lend its name as  a sponsor if the following conditions are met: neutrality is paramount,  the event represents  presenters on the "sides" of the issue, the purpose of the meeting isn't to come to a conclusion and take a vote; the organizers have the capacity to: obtain suitable public space and meet conditions of use such as openings and closings, room set up, etc. ;  secure neutral moderator; establish ground rules for fair conduct; and promote after the event discussion in WOD.

If event organizers demonstrate agreement to the above conditions, a  post would be made on WOD allowing members to express any negative concerns about WOD sponsoring the event within 48 hours( if necessary a survey poll would be taken)  and also to solicit volunteers to assist in conducting the event.

There was some discussion of the issues that underlie the spirited Wal Mart  posts especially on the vision theme.   It was suggested contacting the Port Authority and visiting about what has been learned in the over 100 posts around the Wal Mart issue.  If interest is present, it could be explored how WOD in some modified fashion could be used to gain a better sense of citizen concerns and elicit more  civic participation.

Review and suggestions  occurred regarding a draft information piece post card size which Karen has developed  that can be shared with interested parties regarding participating in WOD.  It will be available soon.

Regarding our Face to Face event commemorating our 3rd birthday,  we've learned we can't work in conjunction with  courts at Victorian Fair. Other options are being explored.  Stay tuned.

Finally, we are going to regularize the meeting schedule for steering committee.. Anyone is welcome to attend.. Meetings will be every other month on 2nd Tues from 4-5:30 p.m.  The next meeting will be Oct  14 in City Hall.    Room will be announced.

PS  Roy in contacting E Democracy reports
the loss of the free web server will not impact us negatively in any way.
