I'd be interested in hearing people's opinions and insights. -Steve Kranz It seems to depend on from which perspective you view the numbers. Winona's unemployment is: higher than the state of Minnesota (4.4) slightly higher than the state of Wisconsin (5.6) well above La Crosse county (3.8) lower than the national (6.3) well below Racine, Wisconsin (7.8) All numbers above from Winona Daily News article of today (http://www.winonadailynews.com/articles/2003/08/29/news/02lead.txt) or La Crosse Tribune article of 7-24-03 (http://www.lacrossetribune.com/articles/2003/07/24/news/zjobless.txt). It's also useful to know that: employment for the year is at a high in Winona the labor force is also at a high for the year (http://data.mnwfc.org/lmi/laus/detail.asp?geog=2705169250&adjust=0) That data indicates to me two things: 1. employment in Winona is growing (as a matter of fact it is higher now than at any time since January, 2000). 2. more people are seeking work which should indicate an increase in their confidence of finding employment. While the situation could be better, some of the trends are positive, and it could also be much worse.
