Board Meeting Highlights
Board Meeting
10.02.03

from my perspective....
Eric Bartleson

OCTOBER REGULAR MEETING DATE CHANGED
The regular meeting for October was changed from October 16th to Tuesday,
October 14th to avoid conflicts with the Education Minnesota break. School
will not be in session on October 16 and 17.

The first Study Session following the new format seemed to go quite well.
There were some concerns that board members could not be heard due to lack
of voice amplification.

Fred Petersen requested that a discussion of the Weapons Policy be placed on
the agenda as a first reading of suggested changes he would like to make to
the policy.

Chairperson Kranz added an item to allow Ron Helmers to address the
scheduling issue with challenge classes that was brought up at the last
board meeting.

Margaret Schild and committee member Rick Iglesias presented four options
for relocating the preschool programs (ECFE and ECSE) in the event Lincoln
School is closed.
The options are attached as a PDF file.

Considerable discussion ensued around the four options. The board requested
that administration develop cost estimates with the architect on the option
to relocate to Goodview Elementary School.

Goal Setting Retreat-The date and location of the retreat has not been
determined.

Challenge Classes - Ron Helmers discussed the process used in scheduling
this year and explained how one section of the Challenge Ancient History and
Challenge Economics class had to be dropped due to scheduling difficulties.
A copy of his handout is attached as a PDF file. Board member Larry Laber
requested that we establish better communications between the high school
and the school board on these complex issues.

WSU Offer to Purchase Lincoln School
The board discussed the $700,000 offer from WSU for the purchase of Lincoln
School. Board members verbalized concern with the low offer and requested
that we instruct our attorney to counter the WSU offer in order to obtain a
sale price that was acceptable and closer to the appraised price of
$1,750,000. The board also requested that a proposal be brought to the
October 14th meeting with a process for obtaining public bids on the Lincoln
property.

Due to lack of time this item was not addressed.

The meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.

Next Meeting: October 16

6:00 p.m. Regular Board Meeting
