[Winona Online Democracy]
Paul,
This is absolutely a local issue as we have several gay and lesbian families (and yes, they are families) right here in Winona. They own homes, they work and pay taxes, they are consenting adults and they are raising children. I personally cannot see how granting them the rights and responsibilities that my husband and I have, would weaken heterosexual marriage. In no way would gay marriages affect the committment I have to my marriage- that's just silly!
I think the government should stay out of defining who's a family, and whether two consenting adults can be married. Promoting a constitutional amendment to take away people's rights, or potential rights is discriminatory, and just plain mean spirited. I'm actually shocked that it's being proposed in our state.
The polygamy debate to me is a whole other subject, One that I'm not sure human nature could pull off.
