I did not perceive Bob's remarks as strident--passionate, yes, but not over the line. I told him privately, as I now say publicly, that I thought his remarks were terrific! They were neither disrespectful nor inaccurate. I feel enraged when I see political machinations employed to stir up people to believe that the world will end if "certain people" are given equity under the law. Women, racial minorities, the poor, immigrants, and refugees have all experienced the scapegoating of gays and lesbians that is now an apparent strategy to draw attention away from our current dangerous domestic and foreign policies that serve the extreme right wing of the political spectrum as well of the top 1% of the income pyramid.

We need more candor like Bob's. Regular readers of this forum know that I speak out if I perceive disrespect. Disrespect and passionate advocacy are not the same. Those who know me also know that I respect views that differ from my own as long as they are not used as political weapons.

My strident (as I have been told) remarks surrounding gay marriage even followed me to the line at the post office on Saturday morning...it was an old friend, and she was supportive (I think...although she suggested that I might regret my remarks, which I do not)...but it was interesting to get the feedback...

I'll try and be less strident...and more informative...which is why I am adding this link to a story in the Miami Herald today.

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/business/7952277.htm

It details some of the challenges that same-sex couples have of making a go of it. It is not a moral argument one way or the other...it is from the paper's business section.

PS...I'm still waiting to hear from any libertarians who might be out there...is there anyone named Salyards on this list?
