[Winona Online Democracy]

Bob,

I didn't find you strident, in fact I couldn't agree with you more. The article is very informative.  Some things to think about: If a gay couple has a child or children, in many states only one parent is the legal parent.  Consequently if their relationship breaks up, that child is not entitled to child support.  Nor would he be entitled to visitation with the non-legal parent- even if that parent had been a stay at home parent doing the primary caregiving.  I suppose even at the end of that parent's life that child doesn't automatically have the right (or responsibility) for making end of life and legal decisions for the "parent".

Yes, as the article points out there are a lot of financial advantages that married people are entitled to that gay couples can't utilize, but the consequences on the family can eclipse those.  Children and families need the legal rights and securities that marriage provides.  There is no way that it is OK for these children to be denied these rights.

>My strident (as I have been told) remarks surrounding gay marriage even followed me to the line at the post office on Saturday morning...it was an old friend, and she was supportive (I think...although she suggested that I might regret my remarks, which I do not)...but it was interesting to get the feedback...
