Notes: Meeting of WoD Steering Committee Mtg 2/10/04
Present: Craig Brooks, Roy Naastrom, Paul Double, Dean Lanz, and Randy Schenkat(note taker)
An interesting discussion regarding the original dreams for a community civic discussion forum took place at WOD meeting
Eric Sorensen, Winonas City Manager, reminded us of the discussion that was taking place back in 1999 prior to Steve Clift's E Democracy and Steve Kranz' energy to work with a planning group to start WOD.
There were several meetings regarding seeking funding to establish the capacity
for community dialogue electronically. Eric envisioned it as a forum to look
at community issues in broadest context seeing the interconnections and links
and considering the tradeoffs in making informed public decisions. The dialogue
would consider different informed points of views that go beyond sound bites
The bulk of the meeting time focused on civic participation in the online
medium. .
In that spirit the City Manager will be posting a request to work with subscribers to Winona Online Democracy around an important city issue. Id really encourage subscribers to get involved and invite others to go to our web site and register to participate. www.winonaonlinedemocracy.org.
Statistics were shared for the past two months:
In this interval of time, there were 90 posts for and average of 1.5 per day. 24% of posts were announcements, 10% on topic of United Way, 12% -Misc, 16%-Crime and prisons, 13% -Walmart, 9% Lincoln School and 16% Gay Rights/polygamy.
A request was presented by Dean Lanz for WOD to co-sponsor with The Winona Area
Peacemakers and League of Women Voters a live forum on the Patriot Act.
Sponsorship was given with the caveats of the event having balance, and that we
aren't committing volunteer time.
The next steering committee will be held at(2nd Tues of every other month) 4:00 pm on April 13th Wenonah Room City Hall. The issues in list management and surveying membership will be addressed then.
