Regardless of the program, political party or illness there will always be
the need for government to provide healthcare for those who are unable to
provide for themselves or have a major catastrophic health expense. The
healthcare crisis is "not about this group of individuals" it is about the
vast majority of people who historically have paid their own way or who's
employer has subsidized their healthcare expenses. If all consumers of
healthcare do not take the time use the system as a limited resource not a
bottomless pit, have ownership of the cost and understand that insurance is
not free healthcare but a group of companies who believe they can manage
your money better than you and by writing rules that control their costs by
restricting your access which enable them to make a profit.

Without individual responsibility there is no accountability.

I would also like to say that for many working people, a simple case of
strep throat or a broken bone (still able to work) can amount to medical
bills in excess of what would be possible to pay for out of the earnings of
a low-moderate wage earner's income. Well child check ups, immunizations,
etc. can quickly mount up for low income people--and many people have
smaller incomes while their children are young. Yet these expenditures can
save a great deal of money later on because the patient is healthier.
Chronic diseases such as diabetes require careful medical monitoring--not
cheap, but well worth the cost in terms of preserving health and avoiding
higher medical costs later on. This kind of routine care would be unlikely
to fall under catestrophic illness coverage, yet could truly be out of
reach, financially, for low wage earners.
