Thanks to Vicki for supplying Nick Coleman's column, which helps make the
Yecke situation understandable to those who've not been directly affected
by her policies. I especially liked the part about worrying that teaching
kids to infer might cause them to question religious doctrine. I hope her
departure is a signal that Minnesota does not want to continue emulating
the Deep South in its educational "reform" process.

I think that the feistiness from the Senate DFLers seems well justified.
Under Pawlenty's leadership, the GOP created last year's budget crisis by
pledging allegiance to no new taxes. The Republicans have clearly been
unwilling to compromise by way of a balanced approach, which would include
some tax cuts and some increases. I believe that Sviggum was in Winona for
an eggs and issues event, and was asked about the GOP's unwillingness to
compromise on their hard-line anti-tax stance. Sviggum's retort was along
the lines of "I guess the DFL will just have to start winning more
elections." What goes around comes around, and the Senate leadership had
decided some time ago to not wimp out this time around. If we expect
bipartisan cooperation, I think it's Pawlenty's and Sviggum's turn to offer
an olive branch, not the other way around.

"If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely
challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn
between a desire to improve the world, and a desire to enjoy the world.
This makes it hard to plan the day."
