[Winona Online Democracy]
Title: Reverence
TO WOD....
beyond the note below. Woodruff will be coming out with a book in 2005
entitled... First Democracy: Facing the Original
Ideas. I think he'd have ideas to apply in the conduct of
WOD.
In addition to
the superb theater that the Great River Shakespeare Festival is
providing Winona, I think the Front Porch series will be
outstanding.
The first guest speaker is Dr. Paul Woodruff, philosopher, translator,
and author. I first learned of him in a very provocative segment
of Bill Moyers' NOW last fall on the topic of Reverence. The full
transcript is available
at:http://www.pbs.org/now/transcript/transcript_woodruff.html
Having worked this past year on the HBC series "Working
Together" which highlighted the "Emerging Practices", I
see a clear relationship between the Emerging Practices and
Reverence. Also, our new superintendent, Paul Durand, has been
mentioning the book by Stephen Carter on Civility , many Winonans have
learned about Crucial Conversations, and Winona Online Democracy seeks
reverence in civic conversations. All of these areas would
be informed by Woodruff's work. His topic for the Front Porch
series is:
"Reverence and the Americican Citizen". This
talk will be presented through the lens of Shakespeare's The
Winter's Tale" A little teaser on The
Winter's Tale

Front Porch Conversations take place at the Recital Hall (WSU's
Performing Arts Center). Tickets are $15. To make reservations or for
