Title: Democracy on 4th of July

Hello...   You received my message on Paul Woodruff's talk on Reverence, and I recognized quite a few WOD folks in audience yesterday .

At the end of his comments he shared some on the 7 features of Athenian Democracy over 2000 years ago. My rough notes list them as:

1. freedom from tyranny
 2. Rule of law
3. equality
4. Ordinary citizen knows enough to participate
5. Reasoning without certain knowledge:trusting in debate and discussion
6. Non specialized education for citizenship
7. Harmony, unity. Working together

These will be main chapters in his forthcoming book  First Democracy: Facing the Original Ideas.

This might be an interesting discussion in looking at our democracy.

He also mentioned a Swedish project on Democracy -  Here's a link

http://www.idea.int/ideas_work/14_political_state.htm

There's an asessment there to look at the functioning of a  democracy.

Finally, today on the Public Radio Program - Speaking of Faith--archived at
http://speakingoffaith.publicradio.org/

there is a terrific interview with Jacob Needleman  on the spiritual roots of our American Democracy.

I'd welcome your reflections on  Democracy and how it plays out-- especially at a local level and what is or could be the role of Winona Online Democracy... Happy  4th!!
