Another place we like is the Staghead in Red Wing. We've found it to be a
great place to meet Twin Cities friends halfway for a nice dinner. They
don't take reservations but you can go for a walk. The food is almost on a
par with Harborview and Currents...and not quite as expensive. There's a
new place opening in Wabasha called Nosh, but it's not open yet. And I
recently had a very nice fresh fish lunch at the second incarnation of
Holmes Landing.
We have also puzzled about Winona. It's just not a community that eats out
that much, or that is looking for anything fancy when it does. Depending on
where you're seated and how the air conditioning is working, the Green Mill
can be OK for a quiet dinner with a glass of wine. I'm guessing the same is
true of Cedar Valley. Any place else?
On the other hand, it could be more extreme. We went to a play this spring
at the Hassler Theater in Plainview that was superbly acted and produced.
Unfortunately, Plainview's nice main street restaurant had recently gone
belly up. The only alternative so far is the Dairy Queen. We ate early at
home before we left.

"If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely
challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn
between a desire to improve the world, and a desire to enjoy the world.
This makes it hard to plan the day."
