Summary of Steering Committee
Mtg WOD 8/10/04(2nd Tues of every other
month)
The meeting was attended by Paul Double, Craig Brooks ,
Kathy Seifert and Randy Schenkat .
The central issue discussed was the request to have a planned virtual
forum in conjunction with the face to face forums that the League of
Women Voters and others are planning.
Randy Schenkat agreed to
develop a letter to mail to candidates to solicit interest in this
process. The League worked cooperatively and mailed these out to all
candidates on August 25th. The letter is posted below and it
gives some details on how the forums would work.
8/25/04
Dear Public Office Candidate:
Winona Online Democracy(WOD) is entering its 5th year as a vehicle to
empower, inform and engage the citizenry by creating an ongoing
community-wide discussion of local public issues. Approximately
225 individuals are subscribers to this list serv. Some of our surveys
over the years have shown that subscribers share what's being aired
in WOD with others as they forward the emails or talk with
others Also, sometimes the media has picked up on stories from
comments in WOD. . So its reach is more that 225 individuals.
For more information go to our web site:
www.winonaonlinedemocracy.org.
In conjunction with the public forums we are planning with the League
of Women Voters, we'd like to invite you to participate in a
virtual on-line forum. With the League, we will develop a broad
question on an important public issue to be discussed in your
forum. We will send you that question 5 days before the live
forum. The n, we will invite you to post your views on the
subject on WOD by 8 a.m. 3 days prior to your forum.
From the candidate statements, subscribers could ask further
questions relevant to the topic, make observations of their own, and
you can respond in any appropriate way. So, for instance, the County
Board race candidates would get the question by the 16th- and would
post at approximately 8 a.m. on the 18th. Your emails as
well as all subscribers go directly to the list serv; there is no
prior screening. Also, all posts are stored at our
archives.
We are making plans for these 4 post primary races:
o September 21 Winona County Board Districts 3 & 4
o September 29 City of Winona: Mayor& Council Positions At
Large & Ward 3
o September 30 Winona Area Public Schools Board Districts 4 &

o October 6 - MN House of Representatives 31A and 28B
