Announcement:
Public Forum in Winona about the U.S. Patriot Act
On Monday, September 27, 2004, from 7:00-9:00 pm, a moderated forum about the U.S. Patriot Act will be held in the Council Chambers of the Winona City Hall to help inform the public about many of the issues raised and the laws contained in the Patriot Act.
Since the Patriot act was signed into law shortly after the 9/11 attack, numerous individuals have claims the Patriot Act unconstitutionally infringes upon the rights of citizens to privacy, freedom of speech and assembly.
Speaking about the risks that the Patriot Act creates for citizens exercising their first amendment rights to freedom of speech will be Teresa Nelson, Legal Counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union Minnesota. Ms. Nelson is a graduate of Winona State University and Hamline University School of Law. Speaking in support of the Patriot Act will be Thomas Heffelfinger, the U.S. Attorney for Minnesota. Mr. Heffelfinger received his BA from Stanford University and his law degree from the University of Minnesota.
This Patriot Act forum is being organized by the Winona Area Peacemakers and co-sponsored by the Winona Chapter of the League of Women Voters, Winona 0n-line Democracy and the Winona Catholic Workers . It is free, open to the public. The forum will be broadcast live on and citizens will be given the opportunity to ask the panelist questions in person, in writing or by calling in.
For more information about the Patriot Act forum or the Winona Area Peacemakers, please call 507-454-3322.
Thanks. Polly Gower
