[Winona Online Democracy] Thank you Dwayne for reminding me me to read the judge's comments. I saw the piece at like 5:45 this morning but then didn't look at the paper again until your post.
I respect Judge Peterson's opinions (because, among other reasons, I know Patte doesn't pick losers, and I know his wife much better than I know his honor). I do not, however, agree with his dislike for the Electoral College...it is a fundamental element of our federal government, and I respect its decisions. It exists for a purpose. I disagree with the idea of IRV and PR (Instant RunOff Voting and Proportional Representation) in particular in presidential campaigns, again, because of my federal perspective and ideology. Both strategies would encourage the development of regional movements, I believe, which would be contrary to federal interests. We can't afford small parties in this nation, I believe, because every fourth November we need a candidate who gets 50 percent straight and clear...that's a national unity issue.
