[Winona Online Democracy]

I would echo John Finn's regrets that the only downside to the revised City Hall renovation plan was that it would draw some needed attention away from the opportunities available at the old Winona Knitting Mills building, which I recently visited.  Not that I am suggesting they change their decision!  However, it  would be great to get a fabulous new business, service oriented, in that building.

The other issue Finn explored was the possibility of getting the Minnesota Design Team to Winona.  I was a member of a Minnesota Design Team group that came to Winona in the mid-1980's, maybe '85?  It might be interesting to revisit the study that came out of that visit, to see what has changed, and what remains the same, in terms of the design issues faced by the community.  That was back when we still had 3rd Street blocked for pedestrian access.   I think the question of river access/design enhancements to the river was at least part of the issues explored.

The upcoming Maritime Heritage Museum on the riverfront offers an opportunity to create a space for a top-of-the line restaurant, as a community and tourism asset.  Hope Bud Baechler (sp?) and his crew will consider that as they draw up their plans.  I know some people who have started several marvelous restaurants... could we get their advice on how to attract the kind of restauranteur to Winona that we need?
