What the Strib article describes is exactly the antidote to Wal Mart that
most experts cite: offer something completely different. No small business
is going to survive going head-to-head with Wal Mart, Target, or K-Mart
selling shampoo, socks, and kleenex. Smaller businesses need to offer the
niche merchandise, the unusual service or ambience, and neighborhood
convenience.

This is why Choates, Nash's and Kindt's (anyone remember these?) will never
come back, but also why Krispy Kreme can never replace Bloedow's.
