"I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy."

- John Adams, 2nd U.S. President
I was reminded of Adams's famous quote as I read Elizabeth Rock's impassioned plea for a renewed focus on intellectual pursuit.  One generation sees imminent threats and must focus on certain things so that the next generation has a stronger foundation.  I think we are in that situation now.  Our parents and grandparents created such a safe and prosperous world that we now have the liberty to divert ourselves with the likes of "Fear Factor" and Britney Spears.  Now those very diversions may contribute to, or blind us from, the next set of threats.  So the challenge to my generation is to study how to instill real love of learning and the life of the mind in our children and grandchildren.  It's quite simple really - our children learn mostly by watching us.  How do we spend our time and energy?
