[Winona Online Democracy] Hi I have been lurking on this forum sense it started when I first got my email address as [EMAIL PROTECTED] many years ago. As you can see I murder the kings English. I have found I could not feel comfortable discussing many things on this forum BUT on this subject I am well versed. In fact in 1955 I was required to take a course in nuclear energy as part of my degree in mechanical engineering at Michigan State. Nuclear power plants use nuclear reaction to make heat. It requires the right conditions to make the terrific heat. After the fuel rods are used up they are highly radioactive for many years but the only heat is from the radioactivity not nuclear reaction. To show this they are stored in a swimming pool next to the plant until they can be moved to another storage. The heat is quit small. In the ocean it would be a non brainer. Now the discussion I am working on is if we can find a way to eliminate the 10,000 year radiation danger then nuclear energy is cleaner than any fossil or organic fuel that is burned. And as the president has said recently we need to restart our nuclear power stations. He also said that the modern plants Are. a great improvement from 20-40 years ago meaning they are safer. The ocean is large. It covers the bulk of the planet. If you can take this waste and somehow get it dispersed in the ocean so each particle of radiation is yards apart the radiation would be less then the natural background radiation we feel every day. That means we don't have to worry about it after a sort time. The radiation would not rise by evaporation or contaminate your well water. If someone started to evaluate and solve problems as they arise this system might work Melvin & Mary Rennells 131 Oskamp Circle Winona MN 55987 home 507-454-1155 cel 507-458-7971 web www.hbci.com/~melr
