[Winona Online Democracy] Brian DeFrang's comments are fair to a point, but I think there may be some information missing. If the governor's proposal came amidst a climate of new investment in education, where we were creating all the educational institutions we needed, then he's right, we should not complain about adding another one. That's not the climate we're in.
We're in a climate of knee-jerk "no new taxes", cutting vital programs, and making schools go begging. What would be the cost-per-student to bolster an existing institution (Winona State, Mankato State) vs. building a new one from scratch? And I'm concerned about suggesting UM/Morris be eliminated - it is consistently ranked nationwide as one of the gems of public post-secondary education. I hope Gov. Pawlenty and others don't want that to be their legacy. Rochester is pushing a 100,000 population and has the institution of the Mayo Clinic. I personally think that a four year college in Rochester to help support the Mayo Clinic as well as other areas is an excellent idea. We should not complain about the advancement of education. Also the colleges that may be cut(Morris) have continually declined in enrollment from the figures that I have seen where RCTC enrollment has continued to climb. Some things aren't always political but are based on statistics. Sorry for the long winded rant.
