What would be the worst possible way to go about making a decision about
moving approximately 27 administrative staff into an existing building with
1,400 teenagers and over 100 staff already in it?

A. Involve no High School Principal or staff person from the High School
in the decision-making process or the committee that will make th decision?

B. Don't tell the High School Principals or staff about the committee?

C. When High School staff and Principals ask if the committee has been
resurrected to look at the High School again, say the issue is dead?

D. Decide to move the 27 staff and Superintendent smack dab in the middle
of the High School and have 1,400 students and 100 staff work around them
all day?

E. Take away over half of the beautiful view through the concourse windows
from the students and public and instead give the "window view" to the
Superintendent and the new School Board Room?

F. Take away half of the already crowded student walk space and cram
traffic flow down into smaller hallways with six minutes of passing time
instead of ten minutes?

G. Make first and second floor hallways more narrow by expanding the
existing Media Center space and and putting lockers up on the second floor
where they have never been before?

H. Talk about new and improved library space but do not allocate money for
it, instead tell staff to do fund raisers?

I. Ignore the other pre-existing problems with the High School (i.e.
carpet, paint, ceiling tiles, air quality, etc.)?

J. Bulldoze the outside area the students use and enjoy the most and put a
parking lot for administrative staff there?

K. Build new bathrooms and eating facilities for the new administrative staff?

L. Jam 30-40 kids in classrooms (remember we're cutting 5 teachers) while
27 people get new space that is about 10,000 sq. ft. (I may be wrong on
that so don't hold me to it. It also includes the computer and lab space.)

M. When High School Principals and staff ask for input or for more
information, chide them from asking and discourage them from asking
anything else by saying it's already a 7-0 decision...

N. Or tell them they don't want to get dragged into decisions?

O. Plan to spend over 1.1 MILLION dollars for 27 people? (That's not
quite $50,000 per administrative staff person.)

P. All of the above?

What is the correct answer?

P. All of the above.

This plan may be approved at next Thursday night's School Board meeting.

The High School and that wonderful view is public space, it belongs to all
of us.

How do those lines of Samuel Taylor Coleridge go?

"In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river ran
Through caverns measureless to man..."
