This information may not be important at all except from a
historical perspective.
When I was elected to the school board in 1980 there was
NO stipend at all for school board members. As far as I know, there was
none prior to that time either. As I recall, we could turn in mileage for
meetings if we wanted to.
It was several years later and I really do not recall in
what year, a set amount of $100 per member was
implemented. I think this was done because it seemed fairer and was easier
to give everyone a set amount instead of the office having to deal with mileage
vouchers etc. There were also questions of
accuracy.
Personally, I didn't know the chair person of the school
board got more than the others and I don't know when that was
implemented.
I know that the question of a higher amount was discussed
from time to time. We all knew that each dollar we got was going to come
out of the budget for teachers, supplies etc. Since there was never a
surplus there, it never felt right to increase our stipend.
