While I personally am not interested in racing on a drag strip, I know from observation in another community that a 1/4 mile timer-equiped recreational strip would draw a large number of young persons from a 100-mile radius. One does not have to be a racer to have a curiosity about how fast one's car can go or what it feels like to be in a competition. For 5 minutes and $10 you get to test yourself and watch others do the same. It is both entertaining and thrillingly experiential and a huge proportion of young people have an interest in cars and speed. Example: A regular "Second Saturday" of every month would put the event on the calender for 4-5 months of the year. A car-theme flea market as well as other interesting attactions might expand interest and demand. Drag racing events could also be held. Paul Double has mentioned to me the idea of closing off a portion of the Winona airport (a strip or apron) occasionally for this purpose. I does not have to be long (1800 feet) and the portable timing equipment is not terribly expensive. The sounds generated at the airport would not impact residential areas. Motorcycle speed timing is also possible. The issue should definitely be explored. Remember: youth are drawn to accelerating experiences!
