Greg Olson said in part:
Just a thought. Rather than litter our roadsides
with white turbine towers AND cell towers why not
look at combining the two technologies on the same tower.
[... snip excellent ideas ...]
What a great thought! When I first saw fields of wind generation plants,
they struck me as inspiring and almost beautiful, but Greg's post nudged me
to consider how the future might be with more of the same. How could a
benevolent technology become a visual nuisance? Well, at one time the
sights, sounds and smells of a massive, smoking steam engine trains coming
right into town or blazing across the countryside was considered an
inspiring presence of modern civilization. Today the steam engine is an
anachronism enjoyed for occasional novelty from history; we are happy that
they are gone, but not so happy with the possibility of dozens of modern
coal trains imposing themselves into the same location, blocking traffic,
raising noise and trailing dust through the community. The point: What was
good once, is not always good forever. Let's not get stuck again.
Placement of the towers and how we can merge utilities into public space is
of critical concern to planning. Keep in mind that often unfortunate
decisions are tolerated in the name of "temporary", but very rarely is a
large project really temporary: they have a tendency to become permanent
unfortunate apparitions.
I am very happy to know that wiser minds than mine are pursuing the wind
solutions. I simply hope it will be done right.
Thanks for that, Greg.
