[Winona Online Democracy]
I am an old man who has lived in Winona most of his
life...I can say without equivocation that a Huff Street underpass is worth ten
million dollars...even without accomodating some commercial
traffic.
Reason Number One: The Ambulance, Fire, and
Police
No more need be said.
Reason Number Two: Huff Street is the main
artery for people traffic coming into the center city. A grade
seperation on Huff is not a luxury...it is an amenity Winonans deserve and
visitors expect.
Reason Number Three:
It is a miracle that no drunk student has been
killed on the tracks on the way to a football game or the lake or
whatever. I remember my student days...the pedestrian underpass(es) that
the Huff project would allow would be a long term safety investment...and not
just for students...lots of kids on bikes would use them as well, I
bet.
Reason Number Four:
I am way beyond tired of not being able to select a
route into downtown that is reliably train-free. I am not a car-centric
person...when I have lived in big cities I have never had a car...always used
transit...when I worked in downtown Minneapolis I commuted by bike for a week to
try it before I decided the buses were trying to kill me.
I supported the proposal back in the 80's to make
5th and 6th streets one way...and shrink Broadway down to a two lane in the
process...leaving room for an east-west bikeway
But most of the time I'm going to have to take my
car...time considerations...whatever...its a fact.
We need the Huff Street underpass...and we got
money from the feds to help...let's build it now.
